Reward–relief compression
One route becomes fast and dominant while other rewards lose enough force to stop competing. In lived experienceTomorrow, family and dignity may still matter deeply—and still fail to compete with relief available in the next hour.
Definition
Addiction does not simply add a powerful reward. It can reorganize the competitive field: substance-related relief becomes reliable, immediate and highly cued while ordinary reward, effortful action and delayed benefit become less available or less believable. The repertoire narrows even when values remain intact.
