Consciousness

Consciousness is not only what is present now, but the structured repertoire the system can integrate, differentiate and reach.

No theory or measure here is presented as a complete solution to consciousness.

The human question

What is lost when suffering makes the world feel smaller than it objectively is?

Free-energy principle and active inference

Perception and action can be framed as two ways an adaptive system reduces mismatch with its generative model.
In lived experience

We do not only predict the world we will meet; through action and avoidance we partly select the evidence that keeps a world believable.

Definition

Karl Friston’s free-energy principle proposes that self-organizing agents maintain viable states by minimizing a variational bound on sensory surprise. Perception updates beliefs; action changes sampled sensations; learning changes the model. Active inference extends this logic to policies and expected future outcomes.

Flow Hijacked lens

Flow Hijacked uses active inference to connect prediction, body regulation, action and temporal agency. Addiction can make a rapid-relief policy highly expected and executable; recovery changes priors, precision, available policies and the environments through which evidence is sampled.

Perception as a controlled hallucination

Anil Seth’s phrase: perception is generated from within, yet continuously constrained by sensory evidence.
In lived experience

The world we experience is neither invented at will nor passively received. It is a disciplined negotiation between expectation and evidence.

Definition

The phrase captures predictive perception: the brain infers the most probable causes of sensory signals using prior expectations and incoming evidence. “Hallucination” here is a provocative metaphor for generative construction; “controlled” marks the decisive constraint imposed by the world and the body.

Flow Hijacked lens

Suffering can narrow the hypothesis space. Threat, shame or craving predictions begin to dominate ambiguous evidence, and action then samples a smaller world. Recovery is not “thinking positively”; it is creating sufficiently safe, embodied and repeated evidence for a wider model to become usable.

Embodied conscious self

Selfhood is continuously shaped by the brain’s best model of the body’s condition and ownership.
In lived experience

Sometimes “I am unsafe” is not a sentence first. It is a body-wide conclusion that thought encounters after it has already begun.

Definition

Interoceptive inference links emotion, body ownership and conscious selfhood to predictions about internal bodily causes. The experienced self is therefore neither a detached observer nor reducible to one body signal; it is an ongoing multilevel model coordinating body, memory, perspective and action.

Flow Hijacked lens

Lecture 27 makes embodiment central to accessible conscious state-space. Withdrawal, panic, depression and trauma can alter what bodily states mean and which identities feel inhabitable. Movement, sleep, co-regulation and therapy can become epistemic experiences: the body learns what kind of world it is in.

Perturbational Complexity Index — “zap and zip”

Perturb the cortex, record the distributed response, then estimate how integrated and differentiated that response is.
In lived experience

Stillness can conceal capacity, and activity can conceal repetition. The pattern produced after a perturbation reveals more than magnitude alone.

Definition

PCI combines transcranial magnetic stimulation with EEG. The “zap” is a controlled cortical perturbation; the “zip” compresses the spatiotemporal response to estimate its algorithmic complexity. Conscious states tend to support responses that are both widespread and differentiated rather than local, stereotyped or absent.

Flow Hijacked lens

PCI offers a powerful demonstration of a general principle: do not infer a system’s capacity from passive appearance alone—perturb it and observe the organization of its response. Flow Hijacked borrows that logic cautiously when asking about recoverability and hidden repertoire, not the clinical PCI score itself.

Integration, differentiation and conscious metastability

Conscious repertoire needs coordinated interaction without collapsing into uniformity or fragmentation.
In lived experience

Mental freedom requires both continuity and surprise: enough self to remain, enough openness to revise.

Definition

Many consciousness theories emphasize a balance: brain activity must integrate across distributed regions while preserving differentiated patterns. Metastability adds the temporal ability to form coalitions, release them and explore alternatives. Too little integration fragments; too little differentiation stereotypes.

Flow Hijacked lens

Flow Hijacked translates this balance into navigable conscious possibility. A rich mind is not random. It can sustain a coherent perspective while permitting emotion, attention, memory and action to reorganize when the world changes.

FH / DEFINED TERM

Compression of conscious possibility

Suffering can narrow not only what consciousness feels, but what it can imagine, enter and leave.
In lived experience

Suffering is not only what consciousness feels. It is what consciousness can no longer reach.

Definition

Lecture 22’s novelty concept describes loss of effective dimensionality, trajectory diversity and reachable futures. Healthy brains also compress—selection is necessary for action. Pathological compression is different because simplification becomes rigid, repetitive and costly to reverse.

Flow Hijacked lens

Depression may compress futures; trauma compress safety; addiction compress reward and action; shame compress social visibility. Healing is not maximal entropy. It is structured re-expansion: enough new states and transitions to restore agency, held by coherence and return capacity.
