Predictive processing

The brain does not wait passively for the world; it continually predicts what its signals mean.
In lived experience

Knowing that a room is safe is not always enough when the nervous system predicts danger faster than reflection can correct it.

Definition

Predictive-processing accounts describe perception and action as hierarchical inference. Generative models anticipate sensory causes; mismatches update the model, the sampling of the world or both. Perception is therefore constrained by incoming evidence without being a simple copy of it.

Flow Hijacked asks what a person’s system has learned to expect next: threat after closeness, shame after visibility, relief after alcohol, failure after effort. A prediction can become part of the vector field because it changes attention, body preparation and action before the anticipated event arrives.

Precision weighting and salience

Some signals are granted more confidence, gain and control over action than others.
In lived experience

A thought can be recognized as unhelpful and still dominate because its felt confidence and urgency remain high.

Definition

In Bayesian and predictive accounts, precision expresses confidence in a signal or prediction. Neuromodulatory and attentional systems help determine which errors, cues and goals receive gain. Salience is not simply importance in the abstract; it is the capacity of a signal to recruit processing and alter behavior.

Addiction can be read partly as distorted competition: a cue for rapid relief receives high precision and action-readiness while ordinary rewards and distant consequences arrive quietly. Recovery involves learning what deserves gain again, not merely suppressing a loud signal by force.

Reward, relief and control circuitry

Wanting, relief, habit, stress and executive control emerge from interacting circuits—not one pleasure center.
In lived experience

The old route can be strongly wanted without being liked, chosen as a value or experienced as freedom.

Definition

Addiction research implicates interacting corticostriatal, extended-amygdala, midbrain and prefrontal systems across incentive salience, negative affect, learning and control. Dopamine is crucial to learning and motivation, but addiction is not adequately described as “too much dopamine” or a permanently broken reward center.

Flow Hijacked treats circuitry as one layer of a coupled field. Neural adaptation alters which trajectories gain force; body state, cues, relationship, meaning and opportunity then shape whether those trajectories are entered, rehearsed or interrupted.

Interoception and the embodied self

The body is not scenery behind consciousness; its predicted condition helps constitute feeling and selfhood.

Sometimes the next compassionate question is not “What do I believe?” but “What condition is my body preparing for?”

Definition

Interoception concerns signals from within the body and the brain’s modeling of their causes. Predictive accounts propose that feeling states emerge from the negotiation between expected and arriving bodily signals. Breathing, pain, inflammation, gut state, fatigue and autonomic tone therefore alter the space in which thought and action occur.

Lecture 27 makes the body part of state-space. A person may understand safety cognitively while remaining unable to inhabit it physiologically. Recovery work can enter through sleep, movement, breath, medication, nutrition, exposure, touch boundaries or co-regulation because each changes the embodied field.

Network integration, segregation and switching

Adaptive brains coordinate specialized networks without forcing all activity into one rigid coalition.
In lived experience

Flexibility is not having every network active; it is recruiting the right coalition and releasing it when the task changes.

Definition

Network neuroscience examines how distributed regions integrate information, preserve specialization and switch configurations across tasks and states. Salience, default-mode and frontoparietal-control systems are useful large-scale descriptions, but their roles are context-dependent and extend beyond simple one-network/one-symptom mappings.

Flow Hijacked looks for loss of flexible switching: rumination that keeps self-referential processing dominant, cue capture that repeatedly recruits motivational routes, or threat that prevents exploratory control. Recovery includes restoring coordination between sensing, valuation, memory and action.

Plasticity, memory updating and consolidation

A new experience becomes treatment only when learning changes what the system can do later.
In lived experience

The old path’s return does not erase new learning. It may mean the new path still needs retrieval cues, repetition and wider contexts.

Definition

Plasticity is the capacity of neural and behavioral systems to change with experience. Memory updating, extinction learning and consolidation describe different processes through which old predictions may be supplemented, inhibited or modified and new responses become more retrievable across time and context.

This is the bridge from one good session to a changed trajectory. Insight may alter a moment; rehearsal, sleep, repeated safe contact and behavior in varied contexts help the new route survive outside the original learning environment.
